From sunrise smiles to afternoon outdoor play, every moment at Hill Country Day School is thoughtfully designed to balance learning, exploration, and joy. Here’s what a typical day looks like for our preschoolers—and why each moment matters.
Morning Welcome: 7:00–9:00 AM
Families arrive at their own pace between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., and our teachers greet every child with warmth and familiarity. Early arrivals enjoy quiet play or, when the weather is nice, time in the backyard for open-ended exploration. This early outdoor option gives children a gentle, nature-filled start to their day.
Morning Snack: 8:30–8:45 AM
Before the day gets rolling, children gather for a light morning snack and handwashing—an opportunity to refuel, connect, and practice healthy routines together.
Outdoor Rotations: 9:15–11:00 AM
Each morning, classrooms rotate through our four playgrounds, two backyard zones, porches, walking trail, and outdoor classroom. These spaces are where much of the magic happens.
Children dig in the garden, balance on logs, splash at the splash pad (in summer months), and explore sensory stations that spark curiosity. Toddlers enjoy safe, age-appropriate play on the porch zones, while older children take walks along the trail, observing bugs, leaves, and birds.
Outdoor time isn’t just “recess”—it’s an essential part of our curriculum, where children learn collaboration, resilience, and problem-solving in the open air.
Indoor Discovery & Small Groups: 11:00–11:45 AM
After outdoor adventures, classrooms transition indoors for small-group learning and exploration centers. This is when children dive into creative projects—painting, building, sorting, and storytelling—guided by teachers who spark deeper learning from their play.
Lunch: 12:00–12:30 PM
Lunch is served family-style, giving children chances to practice independence, table manners, and conversation. Teachers sit alongside them, modeling gratitude and connection.
Nap & Quiet Time: 12:45–2:45 PM
After a busy morning, classrooms dim the lights for rest. Some children nap, while others quietly look at books or listen to calming music. This restorative period helps them reset both body and mind for the afternoon.
Afternoon Snack: 3:00–3:15 PM
As everyone wakes, snack time provides comfort and community again—sharing food and conversation before the second wave of outdoor exploration begins.
Afternoon Outdoor Play: 3:15–5:15 PM
Afternoons at Hill Country Day School are filled with flexibility. Classes rotate outdoors again, giving children extra time to explore their favorite playgrounds, backyard zones, or the walking trail.
Whether they’re testing out a new obstacle course, drawing with chalk, or collecting nature treasures, children end their day with fresh air, laughter, and movement.
Winding Down & Pickup: 5:15–6:00 PM
As the day slows, children participate in quiet indoor activities—reading, building, or storytelling—while waiting for families to arrive. Teachers share highlights and joyful moments from the day, helping parents feel connected to their child’s experience.
