Traveling with Kids for Spring Break: Tips for a Smooth Adventure

Spring break is around the corner, and for many families, it’s the perfect chance to hit the road or sky for a well-deserved getaway. Traveling with kids, though, can feel like a high-stakes juggling act—excitement one minute, meltdowns the next. Kids thrive with a little preparation and flexibility, and no one knows this better than our founder, Haleigh Almquist. Before launching the school, Haleigh spent the first two years of her childcare career as a travel nanny, caring for a spirited two-year-old while jetting off with his family to places like Ethiopia (stay tuned for that story!), Paris, and Acapulco. Her job? Packing smart, keeping him engaged, and nurturing his curiosity on every adventure. Now with three children of her own in tow, these real-world experiences shape her traveling approach—and these tips—to help your family travel with ease.

Plan, But Stay Loose

Kids love routine, but travel throws that out the window. Start by planning key moments—travel times, meals, and a rough idea of activities—but leave room for spontaneity. Try to choose departure times that favor your child’s schedule. All toddlers thrive best when they have a nap, if possible choose an evening departure flight so your little one gets a nap. Flights can also get expensive for a family, but also try and avoid those early morning flights that require your family to be up before 6 AM. Starting the day at 3-4 AM makes for a really long day and can lead to overtired and cranky kids. Over-scheduling can also lead to cranky kids (and parents), keep your first day light to allow for schedule adjustments before jumping into a jammed packed itinerary.

Pack Smart for the Journey

Haleigh’s travel experience days have taught her the art of the “survival kit.” For your trip—whether it’s a car ride or a flight—pack snacks (mess-free wins like apple sauce pouches, tangerines or crackers), water, and small surprises—headphones, an ipad (if using devices), stickers, a new coloring book, or a little toy car (links to our favorites below). For longer hauls, download a few episodes of their favorite show or a kid-friendly podcast. If you’re flying, toss in lollipops or gum for ear pressure during takeoff and landing. Keep essentials like diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes within arm’s reach (a set for yourself too)—because spills and blowouts don’t wait for a convenient stop. Bring a gallon zip lock or two incase you need to store dirty clothes until you get to your destination.

Embrace the Breaks

Kids aren’t built for marathon travel days. Build in pit stops if you’re driving—think playgrounds or rest areas where they can burn off energy. On a plane? Take a walk up the aisle when it’s safe and ensure they get some wiggle time before boarding. Spring weather can be your ally—let them stretch their legs outside while you soak up some sun, too. A little fresh air cuts the “are we there yet” chorus short.

Lean Into Kid-Friendly Fun

Spring break destinations don’t need to be fancy to be memorable. Look for spots with nature trails, splash pads, or hands-on exhibits—perfect for curious explorers. Beach trips mean sandcastles (Clearwater Beach, Florida); mountains (Park City, UT) offer easy hikes. Even a staycation (Camp Fimfo) works with a campout and pooltime. The goal? Tire them out in the best way, leaving room for downtime.

Roll with the Punches

Travel with kids is unpredictable—someone’s shoe will get lost, or the weather might flop. If a tantrum hits, take a breath and redirect with a snack or a game. If plans change, pivot. The magic of spring break isn’t in perfection—it’s in the messy, joyful moments you’ll laugh about later.

So, pack your bags, grab the kids, and make this spring break one for the books. Adventure’s calling—and you’ve got this!
